Homemade Wine Making and Experience

As with any other endeavor, experience yields success. This is true of any activity that requires skill. If you are new to home wine making, the first bottles you produce will not win any prizes. No, this is not to say those first bottles will automatically taste awful. Nor does it mean it is impossible to make a great batch the first time out either. What it means is experience creates the foundation needed to make great wine.

For example, if the taste of the wine is more akin to grape juice, there must be a reason. The problem may only be decipherable to an experienced winemaker. For example, someone with experience might suspect limited fermentation is the culprit. Again, experience creates a critical eye that can pinpoint problem areas. However, someone who is new to this hobby will have difficulty doing this. This is not a knock on the person. It is an honest evaluation.

Of course, the number of mistakes made decrease over time provided evaluations are made. That is, if the wine falls below expectations, you need to figure out why. When the ‘culprit’ is determined, the problem should be corrected when making the next batch. This is the process of learning by refinement. It works wonders and it can lead to a greatly improved batch of wine.

If you are new to homemade winemaking, do not despair if you make many mistakes. This is all part of the proverbial learning process. In time, the number of mistakes you make will greatly reduce as you gain more experience. That is simply the natural order of things. So don’t fret it. Most of all, don’t give up. Learning is fun when you approach it with the right attitude. Simply apply that attitude to the trial and error process. Remember, there is a lot of free wine to acquire if you stick with your hobby!
